Artisan Edinburgh
Catherine Aitken
The artisans of Scotland have a well-deserved international reputation and nowhere is this more evident than in Edinburgh. From ceramicists to weavers, silversmiths to kilt-makers, traditional methods blend with modern cutting-edge techniques to create the wonderful objets d’art and apparel that we use, wear and admire in the everyday. Innovative and entrepreneurial, the craft practitioner lives by their creativity, supporting Scotland’s economy and protecting traditions that go back hundreds of years.Artisan Edinburgh invites you in to the rarely seen world of the artist’s studio, showcasing their work and workspaces. We learn first-hand the methods each maker uses and how it forms the essence and meaning of their work – and what it takes to be an artisan in today’s world of mass production and make a living through craft.
Catherine Aitken
Catherine came into the craft world after a career producing films and documentaries for TV and cinema. It’s when she created bags to promote a film at the Cannes Film Festival that Catherine found a new career. The two elements of film-making and bag making lived side by side for a few years but in 2014 Catherine hung up her producing hat to concentrate on the eponymous brand.
