Awa Doon e Toon
By Julia Lynch; illustrated by Caitlin Moffat
Awa Doon e Toon is an illustrated children’s book that follows a young boy’s determination to travel into town by all sorts of imaginative forms of transport but is thwarted each time by the wild Scottish weather outside. This book is an educational and entertaining introduction to the Doric dialect for children, teaching young readers many new words about weather conditions and modes of transport.
Julia Lynch & Caitlin Moffat
Julia Lynch was born and raised in Aberdeen but now lives in Cheshire with partner Paul. Julia enjoys writing Doric poetry and humour and sharing on social media. This in turn lead to the idea of creating a children’s book with the aim of preserving the Doric dialect and encouraging north-east children to engage in and celebrate the mither tongue. Apart from a passion for the Doric dialect, in Julia’s spare time she also enjoys playing the ukulele and spending time with grandson Finlay (who inspired the illustrations of the Loon in the story).
Caitlin Moffat is a fourth-year Communication Design student at Robert Gordon University. In her third-year placement, she was introduced to the Doric language through a collaboration with Doric Books, which became a richly immersive learning experience. Not only was she engaging with a new dialect, but she was also illustrating for the very first time. Creating artwork for a children’s book allowed her to explore visual storytelling in a way that was both creatively fulfilling and culturally enlightening. This project marked the beginning of Caitlin’s illustration journey and helped shape a new direction in her design practice.
