Donegal families are an interesting mix of native Irish families and of Scots-Irish who came to the county from the 17th century. It experienced a high level of emigration both to North America and also to Scotland and North of England. Common names in the county include O’Neill, O’Donnell, Bonner, Barr, Bradley, Duffy, Friel, Gormley, O’Kane, Gallagher, Harkin, McBride, McCafferty, McDaid, Patton, Morrissey, Ward, and Sweeney. Helen Meehan
Helen Meehan (nee Montgomery) was born in Co. Donegal and was a Primary School Teacher until her retirement in 1998. She is current President of the Donegal Historical Society. She is a regular speaker at Society Seminars and to other groups, and has published in The Donegal Annual, Bealoideas (University College Dublin), Due North – Journal of the Federation of Ulster Local Studies (Belfast), Journal of Clan Montgomery, The Spark (Enniskillen) as well as many local history publications. In 2005 Helen published her 728 page Inver Parish in HistoryA”. Helen is married to John – and lives in Mountcharles, Co. Donegal and has four grown up children; Dr. Eucharia, Rosaire, Edward and Roberta.
