“When Maude Strong was twenty-four she killed a child.” This one stark sentence lies at the heart of Maude’s life. The court found her not guilty of dangerous driving – she was only going 24 miles an hour; the child ran out into the road; there was no time to stop. But no one else killed that child, and if the court wasn’t going to punish her, Maude would punish herself. The next ten years have been spent in shadows: living in a basement flat on one of London’s most anonymous roads; working as a ghost-writer and burying herself in other people’s stories. Until a stranger’s knock on her door leads to an unexpected trip to Scotland, and the suspicion that it may be possible after all for broken hearts to mend.
