Structural Hidden Violence

Arie Plat

Silvia Silberman

The authors propose a fresh look at the issue of violence and present a thesis that explains why most programs available have only a limited impact. It is their contention that violence is inherently human, and therefore can only be understood and dealt with by developing awareness but not eradicated. The authors elaborate on the concept of structural violence and its components, such as the violence that develops within communities and organizations and reflects the (macro) social dynamics that breeds micro-violence. Following the theoretical and conceptual chapters, they describe methodologies deriving from this perspective that enhance the ability to cope with violence and present interventions (cases) in which they have been involved.
