Wanderings with a Camera in Scotland: The Photography of Erskine Beveridge
Lesley M. Ferguson
Erskine Beveridge (1851-1920) was the owner of a Dunfermline based company specialising in the production of fine table and bed linen, with an active interest and enthusiasm for archaeology and history. He undertook archaeological excavations in North Uist, carried out detailed surveys of graveyard monuments in Fife, compiled a Bibliography of Dunfermline and West Fife, published volumes on Coll and Tiree, and North Uist, and studied place names and folklore. Beveridge was also a keen amateur photographer, taking pictures on his travels throughout Scotland. From black houses in the Western Isles and Highland crofts in the shadow of Ben Nevis, to remote castles in Argyll and harbour views in Fife, the full collection held in RCAHMS contains some 750 of his original glass plate negatives, which were saved from destruction in a mill building in the 1960s. This lavishly illustrated volume highlights a selection of the finest photographs taken by Beveridge between 1880 and 1919. With a biographical introduction by Lesley Ferguson, ‘The Photography of Erskine Beveridge’ illustrates one of Scotland’s most remarkable photographic collections.
