Fruitmarket Publishing

Fruitmarket is a free, public space for culture in the heart of Edinburgh, providing inspiration and opportunity for artists and audiences. We programme, develop and present world-class exhibitions, commissions, publications, performances, events and engagement activities, opening up the artistic process. 

Our award-winning publications, extend the life, reach, and impact of our exhibition and commissions, and give artists a tool to reach audiences and develop their careers.

We publish more than 4 titles per year, producing titles for every exhibition, as well as poetry and special commission projects. Almost all publications are edited, designed and production-managed in-house. We work directly with artists, estates and foundations, curators and writers, eschewing any house style. Our publications have high production values and are conceived as part of the exhibition-making process, offering space for reflection on and evaluation of an artist’s work and ideas. Our books prioritise: 

• New writing – commissioning new critical thinking to bear on an artist’s work or new work published for the first time
• New photography – installation and individual shots, ensuring an artist’s work reaches a wide public and giving artists a valuable resource
• Market demand – making the right book at the right time for the right market

We are well networked, publishing often in partnership books to co-publish and distribute books internationally we have worked previously with Hatje Cantz, Yale University Press, Reaktion Press, Hauser & Wirth Publishers and our books are distributed by Art Data (UK), Idea Books (Europe) and DAP (US).
