Geoffrey Jellicoe: The Studies of a Landscape Designer Over 80 Years: v. 2: “Gardens and Design”, “Gardens of Europe: Pre-war Studies, Critical and Creative – The Guelph Lectures”

Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe

“Gardens and Design”, a collaboration with J.C. Shepherd and originally published in 1927, is arranged in three sections, the first of which comprises Jellicoe’s general observations in a series of essays entitled “People and Gardens, Art and Nature and Unity”. The next section deals with the Villa Gamberaia in Italy, Le Notre at Versailles and the English tradition. The final part is devoted to a discussion of “The English School of Landscape Gardening, Little Thakeham, Sussex” with a concluding study entitled “The National Garden”. The text is supported throughout with photographs and measured drawings. “Gardens of Europe”, based upon lectures given in 1936, is intended primarily as a leisurely summary of earlier work, such as “Italian Gardens of the Renaissance”, “Gardens and Design”, “Baroque Gardens of Austria”, “Garden Ornament and Decoration” and of articles such as “The Rhine Gardens” which have appeared from time to time in the architectural press. England, Scotland, France, Germany, Austria and Italy are the European countries containing gardens discussed and commented upon by the author.
