Picasso on Paper
Patrick Elliott
Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) is widely recognised as the greatest artist – and greatest printmaker – of the twentieth century. This catalogue, which accompanies a major exhibition at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh, charts the full range of Picasso’s graphic work, from a pastel drawing made in the late 1890s, when he was still a teenager, to a drawing made in 1971, when he was eighty-nine years old. It covers the full range of his printmaking activity, from etchings and engravings to colour linocuts and lithographs. The exhibition is based on the world-renowned Picasso collection of the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart (Graphische Sammlung), but includes many other works. The essay and detailed catalogue notes by Patrick Elliott constitute an important addition to the literature on Picasso.
