A Swedish Field Trip to the Outer Hebrides, 1934 in Memory of Sven T. Kjellberg and Olof Hasslöf

Alexander Fenton

Compiled and edited by Alexander Fenton with Mark A. Mulhern

In 1934, Sven T Kjellberg, Director of Göteborgs Historiska Museum and his assistant, Olof Hasslöf, travelled the length of the Outer Hebrides, south to north, mainly on bicycles. They wanted to know if there were ethnological connections between Swedish fishermen and those on the other side of the sea.

Their diary and notebook, given here in translation, together with the photographs and sketches, say much about the homes, their furnishings, equipment and tools almost eighty years ago. They provide us with a unique insight into island life at a point of transition.
