From Kelso to Kalamazoo: The Life and Times of George Taylor, 1803-1891

Margaret Jeary

Mark Mulhern

Part of the Flashbacks series of oral histories, this book was produced from the manuscript held by George Taylor’s descendants for over a hundred years. The son of a Border shepherd, Taylor, now in his fifties, and a horticulturalist, moved his family from Kelso to Kalamazoo, Michigan. Two of his four wives died in childbirth. He made several return visits to Scotland. He comments on matters of the day such as slavery and the Great Fire of Chicago.

From Kelso to Kalamazoo is all too rare a testament to the realities of emigration from the lowlands of Scotland to the USA.

Publisher NMS Enterprises Ltd – Publishing, co-published with the European Ethnological Research Centre, as part of the Flashbacks series, General Editor Alexander Fenton.
