The Highland Games
Gael Harrison
James MacTavish is a highland man, a gamekeeper and ghillie on the west coast of Scotland, a proud man seeking a perfect woman to be his wife. Grace from the Post Office has been in hot pursuit of him for years, but he finally loses his heart to the beautiful Suzannah, recently arrived in the village of Drum Mhor after a broken love affair in Edinburgh. Their romance is of enormous interest to the feisty village matrons: Dolly who runs the B&B, Kathleen from the Tea Room, and Lottie the hypochondriac, all who have little good to say about anybody. Their tittle-tattle is constantly fuelled by the antics of Elvis the Post, Hector the eccentric old shepherd, Wee Eck, and young Joker MacTavish. A whirlwind of dramas unfolds against the backdrop of mountains, sea and crofts. James MacTavish’s gentle charms permeate the pages and generate a feeling of what is important in life. It is a love of the land, and a love of the people and creatures with whom it is shared.
Reviews of The Highland Games
"Ms Harrison weaves her story with a gentleness which blends beautifully into its background of mountains, sea and crofts with just the odd ripple of village tittle-tattle to ruffle the surface." – Ian Smith, The Scots Magazine // "I loved this!! A real page turner and yes, I can see and hear Scotland in the pages. So glad I got this – thanks so much. Gael looks such a nice person and it sure comes out in this book." – HELEN MISKIN, AMAZON REVIEWS (New Zealand) // "If you're missing 'Monarch of the Glen' … try 'Highland Games' set on the west coast of Scotland. It's a real page-turner with some cracking dialogue and lots of genuinely comic situations – where there's shade as well as light. A great sense of place and some lovely writing. I thoroughly recommend this story of the highland gentleman James MacTavish and the beautiful Suzannah, the woman he loved and lost and loved again. But a word of warning – stay away from Hector if he starts to talk about two and half seagulls." – MARJORETTE, AMAZON REVIEWS //
