Kabuki: Japanese Theatre Prints

Rosina Buckland

During the 19th century in Japan woodblock prints were a cultural phenomenon, with thousands of designs issued every year. Prints were a cheap and colourful medium of entertainment, much like magazines and posters today.

An exhibition of a selection of National Museums Scotland’s magnificent and little-seen collection of these prints, acquired in the 1880s at the peak of their popularity, and featuring the major artists of the time, was shown over the winter 2013/14.
