Phillimore’s Edinburgh

Jan Bondeson

Reginald P. Phillimore (1855-1941) was one of Britain’s leading postcard artists of his time. A great friend of the Athens of the North, he settled in North Berwick and delighted in depicting various Edinburgh locations, both famous and obscure. Artistically, these cards are some of the finest he produced. He sold his cards through a network of dealers, all over Britain, and since he employed a local schoolgirl to hand colour his drawings, no two coloured cards are alike. Although some of Phillimore’s Edinburgh cards are easy to come by, others are excessively rare and sought after today. This book brings together, for the first time ever, all Phillimore’s Edinburgh postcards, to present a fascinating and unique picture of the highways and byways of the great city, from a series of vintage views by a master artist. The book ‘Phillimore’s Edinburgh’ makes use of all of his 92 Edinburgh postcards, with explanatory text, with a number of supplementary illustrations, and in a few instances photographs of the site as it is today. Since some of Phillimore’s cards are excessively rare, it has required the collaboration of the world’s leading collector of his cards to make the book a reality, and he has promised to supply scans of the cards in his collection. This unique book could not be replicated, since no one has all the cards. It will appeal to those who know and love Edinburgh and to postcard collectors.
