Colouring the Nation: The Turkey Red Printed Cotton Industry in Scotland c. 1840-1940

Stana Nenadic

Sally Tuckett

‘Turkey red’ was a method of dyeing adopted by textile manufacturers in the Vale of Leven, Dunbartonshire. It produced a vibrant red colour which could withstand sunlight and washing and the fabrics were designed with exotic patterns, mainly for overseas markets.

The Turkey Red Collection in the National Museum of Scotland contains 200 pattern books and around 40,000 textile samples. These are showcased here, with chapters on the history of their design and dyeing and printing processes.
