Eileen Agar: 1899-1991

Mr. Andrew Lambirth

Eileen Agar’s career spanned over seventy years, during which time she continually experimented with a wide range oftechniques and subject matter. She is often categorised as a Surrealist, and much to her surprise, she was among those British artists chosen to exhibit alongside Dali, Ernst and Miro in the International Surrealist Exhibition held in London in 1936. While her association with Surrealism greatly enhanced her reputation, she never saw her work simply in terms of that movement. She drew equally from Cubism and abstraction to form a uniquely individual style with which to express her surrealistic fantasies.
