Common Grace (Volume 2): God’s Gifts for a Fallen World
Abraham Kuyper
Melvin Flikkema
Jordan Ballor
Common Grace is often considered Abraham Kuyper’s crowning work, an exploration of how God expresses grace even to the unsaved. Kuyper firmly believed that though many people in the world will remain unconverted, God’s grace is still shown to the world as a whole. The second volume of Common Grace contains Kuyper’s doctrinal exploration of the impact and implications of this aspect of Reformed theology. Never before published in English, this translation Common Grace is now available as part of a 12-volume series of Kuyper’s most important writings on public theology. Created in partnership with the Kuyper Translation Society and the Acton Institute, the Abraham Kuyper Collected Works in Public Theology will deepen and enrich the church’s understanding of public theology in today’s world.
Abraham Kuyper
James Bratt (Ph.D., Yale University) taught in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Pittsburgh before returning to his alma mater, Calvin College, where he taught in the History Department for twenty-nine years until his retirement in 2016. He has received numerous scholarly awards, including three Fulbright grants for research in the Netherlands and teaching in China. He is author of Abraham Kuyper: Modern Calvinist, Christian Democrat (Eerdmans, 2013), the definitive English-language biography of Kuyper, and editor of the path-breaking English translation of Kuyper’s shorter works, Abraham Kuyper: A Centennial Reader (Eerdmans, 1998). Abraham Kuyper (1837-1920) was a leading Dutch figure in education, politics, and theology. He was a minister in the Dutch Reformed Church, was appointed to Parliament, and served as prime minister. Kuyper also founded the Free University (VU) in Amsterdam, a political party, and a denomination, in addition to writing on a dizzying array of subjects.
