The Islands Book Trust

Since 2003, IBT has published over 100 books or booklets on the history and culture (in English and Gaelic) of Scottish islands. In an earlier period we were publishing over 10 books pa. Our website shows the publications currently in print. Our most recent book is our acclaimed ‘Bearnaraigh na Hearadh: ‘Tis Fifty Years Since – A Study of Life in a Hebridean Island Community’ by Susanne Barding, launched on 29th September 2023.

IBT also organises events, makes broadcasts, and encourages research on island topics (as well as publishing books) in pursuit of our charitable purposes. We have over 150 members from throughout the world, mainly residents of Scottish islands or the island diaspora, as well as many people resident elsewhere but with an interest in island history. We aim to bring people together from different backgrounds (eg academic experts and island communities) to learn from each other. Publications are the major (but not the only) way of achieving this.
