Conservation Issues in Modern and Contemporary Murals
Mercedes Sanchez-Pons
Will Shank
Laura Fuster-Lopez
This volume is the long-awaited print version of a groundbreaking conference that took place at the Universidad Politecnica de Valencia in 2012, which brought together an international group of artists, conservators, curators, public art managers and scientists to share their experiences with a little-understood specialization: the conservation of wall paintings of the 20th and 21st centuries. The resulting presentations shed new light on a rapidly evolving and innovative aspect of the conservation profession that will be of particular relevance in the future. The book presents eye-opening observations of artists considering the conservation profession for the first time, as well as invaluable research presented by trail-blazing conservation scientists. As such, Conservation Issues in Contemporary Modern Murals, edited by leading professionals in the field, is the definitive work on a previously under-examined specialization of the art conservation profession, and of the creative visual arts.
Mercedes Sanchez-Pons
Will Shank studied art history and the conservation of traditional paintings in Florence and at the Institute of Fine Arts of New York University and the Harvard University Art Museums. As Head of Conservation at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and subsequently as an independent scholar and conservator, he has focused on issues specific to paintings of the 20th and 21st centuries, with a recent specialty in outdoor murals. He was awarded the Rome Prize in 2005 and the American Institute for Conservation Advocacy Award in 2010 for his work with the organization of which he is co-founder and co-chair, Rescue Public Murals. Laura Fuster-Lopez is a Professor in the Department of Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage at the Universidad Politecnica de Valencia, Spain. After completing several internships in institutions such as the Istituto Centrale per il Restauro in Rome and the Smithsonian Center for Materials Research and Education in Washington, DC, she received her PhD in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage in 2006. Her current research interests focus on the structural behaviour of cultural materials, as well as the environmental effects on their stability and preservation. She has served as a board member of the European Network for Conservation Restoration Education and assistant coordinator of the ICOM-CC Education and Training Working Group since 2011. Mercedes Sanchez-Pons is a Professor in the Department of Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage at the Universidad Politecnica de Valencia, Spain, and a member of the Research Team for Conservation and Restoration of Wall Painting in the Instituto de Restauracion del Patrimonio (IRP) at the same university. After several years of researching and working with Baroque mural painting, she received her PhD in the Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage in 2002. Her current research interests focus on the conservation of modern and contemporary murals, specifically the techniques and materials used by artists. Since 2007, she has also been a member of the board of directors of the Faculty of Fine Arts at the UPV.
