Falkirk
Jack Gillon
Falkirk has a long and intriguing history. The Antonine Wall, built by the Romans to mark the northern frontier of the empire, passed through the town. Its unique location at the junction of the Forth and Clyde Canal and the Union Canal led to its prominence during the Industrial Revolution as a major centre for iron casting, which brought prosperity. Today Falkirk enjoys a reputation as one of Scotland’s most beautiful towns and it boasts popular tourist attractions such as the Falkirk Wheel and the breathtaking Kelpie statues, both of which complement and build upon its industrial heritage. Using old images juxtaposed with modern photography, author Jack Gillon explores how the town has changed and developed over the years.
Jack Gillon
Jack was born and brought up in the Falkirk area. He has lived in Edinburgh for many years, but has fond memories of his early life in Falkirk and considers himself to be a Falkirk ‘Bairn’. Writing this book has allowed Jack the chance to re-acquaint himself with some of his old haunts. His previous publications include Eccentric Edinburgh (Moubray House 1990), Edinburgh in the 1950s (Amberley 2014) and Leith Through Time (Amberley 2014)
