The Pentland Hills: 30 Walks in Edinburgh’s Local Hills

Susan Falconer

A guidebook to walking Scotland’s Pentland Hills – a popular, easily accessible range to the south-west of Edinburgh. The 30 walks are suitable for all levels of experience, and the routes described have been chosen to give a flavour of the hills at their best. As far as possible the routes are circular, for some walks you may need to retrace your steps for a short way back to the start point, but none is linear. There are optional links with other routes in the book included to lengthen some walks and informative ‘points of interest’ are found throughout. The Pentland Hills offer a variety of experiences from an undulating ridge walk to a stroll beside the quiet waters of a reservoir. They reach a maximum height of 579m at Scald Law, although most lie between 400m and 550m in height.

Reviews of The Pentland Hills: 30 Walks in Edinburgh’s Local Hills

'The gentle rolling, grass and heather clad, Pentland Hills form a familiar backdrop to the City of Edinburgh. The northern part of the range is a Regional Park, with a ranger service. The author, who began walking in the area during her early teens became a countryside ranger in 1995. In this, her first guidebook, she describes 30 walks, with routes clearly illustrated on OS maps. All are easily accessible from Edinburgh and some can be adapted, or linked, to create longer walks.'(Strider / August 2007)Check out the review on the following websiteUndiscoveredscotland.com
