The Muckle Birdie Match
by Tullos Primary School, by Jackie Ross, by Aaron Gale
Set in Torry, Aberdeen, The Muckle Birdie Match is a lively Doric tale in which Team Endangered takes on Team Common in an unforgettable football showdown. Feathers fly as local birds — from Tawny Hoolet to Eider Deuk — compete in a dramatic match watched by the whole bird world.
Beneath the humour and sporting rivalry lies a powerful environmental message. As tensions give way to unity, the birds recognise their shared challenges: habitat loss, climate change, and the pressures facing wildlife today.
Alongside the story, the book includes a beautifully designed field guide featuring professional wildlife photography, factual information about each bird, and a locally verified habitat map created in consultation with a naturalist.
The result is a unique blend of Doric storytelling, environmental education, and community collaboration.
Tullos Primary School (Author)
The project was developed through a series of creative and educational workshops led by Doric Books CIC at Tullos Primary School. Pupils learned about local bird species, habitats, and conservation issues, while contributing characters, ideas, and plot elements for the story. Jackie Ross and Aaron Gale wove together ideas from multiple classes into a cohesive narrative, ensuring the pupils’ voices remained at its heart. A local naturalist advised on species selection and verified the accuracy of
habitat information and mapping.
The book represents a genuine collaboration between professional creators, educators, conservation expertise, and young storytellers.
