Wirds o Banff is a unique, youth-led celebration of North-East Scots and the natural world. Created entirely by S3 pupils at Banff Academy, the book explores Doric words for birds, beasts, insects, and plants, reconnecting language with landscape in
fresh and meaningful ways.

Inspired by conversations around “lost words” and biodiversity loss, this richly illustrated glossary revives traditional Doric vocabulary while giving space for young people’s own reflections, research, and creative responses. Each entry combines local language, folklore, natural history, and personal insight, making the book both educational and deeply heartfelt.

More than a glossary, Wirds o Banff is a testament to the vitality of Doric as a living language — one that continues to evolve in the voices of young people today.
