Jist Sayin’
By Lilian Ross
Jist Sayin is a collection of short stories, poems, and prose about Lilian Ross’s own memories, observations and life experiences of the folk and culture of Aberdeenshire. The collection’s theme is, ‘Echoes o the past to inspire voices o the future’, and feature works on identity, language and community, shaped by the traditions, customs and landscapes of a whole way of life. Presenting vivid imagery and vibrating with rich Doric lyrical colloquialisms from ‘folk o my ain kin.’ these poems and stories are a marrying of autobiographical and fictional accounts illuminated by humour and intimate nostalgia.
Lilian Ross
Born in the fertile Buchan Heartlands of Aberdeenshire, Lilian’s young life was steeped in the traditions of rural culture. Songs, stories and poetry round the fire was her grounding for what is now her vocation and profession. Lilian writes in Doric and English. In addition to her written work, she has also performed in festivals around the UK and Ireland and has recorded voiceover work and an album; Thorns and Roses, a mix of contemporary folk and traditional songs. Lilian has been delivering workshops on Scots Language in
primary and secondary schools for many years helping to address the demands of the Curriculum for Excellence. She also published a book and CD of songs and rhymes in Scots as a resource for schools, Yokie Tonsils.
